DOS and DON´TS in SHANGHAI / SHENZHEN

DO

  • Mix business and pleasure: go out to eat with contacts, this can boost your business in China!
  • Make visits to your Chinese business partners out of politeness - this means that you will also receive a few of these!
  • Get to know Chinese culture and learn a little Chinese.
  • Greet people with a handshake (but never with a hug)!
  • Learn to read between the lines when discussing things with Chinese people - they generally express their opinions indirectly and in a polite manner.

DON´T

  • Don’t ignore problems during a discussion!
  • Don’t offend your business partners - for example by setting a specific asking price!
  • Don’t make your position too rigid, and remain friendly even when discussing differences of opinion.
  • Do not force a consensus, take cultural differences into consideration.
  • Avoid taboos such as the political situation in Tibet, human rights or topics that could be considered rude (no sex, no politics)!
