DOS and DON´TS in JAKARTA

DO

  • Take your time and be patient when doing business!
  • Always be polite and humble.
  • Never put your business partner under pressure or embarrass them (this leads to loss of face)!
  • Send a polite reminder of a planned business meeting before it is due to occur, or ask for confirmation of your appointment.
  • Wear a smart batik shirt instead of a suit and tie! It will keep you cool in the hot climate and shows that you are interested in Indonesian culture.

DON´T

  • Don’t plan too many meetings on one day, as there is a lot of traffic.
  • Don’t make business appointments on holidays, particularly at the end of the fasting period (Idul Fitri).
  • Never discuss problems directly!
  • Do not take the relaxed approach that Indonesians have to time personally!
  • Do not interpret a smile in the wrong way - if you are in doubt, ask politely and carefully. A friendly smile is a standard reaction in Indonesia and it can have many different meanings.
